Closing in on the Cash

OK. I want to find my mom more than anyone, but all of these theories are kind of starting to freak me out. I mean, she’s my MOM and we’re talking about her being in danger, being a secret agent, being Amanda’s mom, or being in any way connected to Thornhill (and I swear if anyone hints that it was romantic again, I’ll puke). I need to take a step way back from all of this and focus on one piece of the puzzle. Oh, and for the record, I blame 112% percent Mr. I-Love-Mr.Snuffles, aka HAL, for opening this Pandora’s box last week and posting without telling anyone. So we’re going back to the root of it all… the money.

There wasn’t a consensus last time Tackle the Text: The Case of the Mysterious Money about how Amanda got the dough. So Nia, Hal, and I took your ideas and combined what we knew about Amanda and have narrowed it down to three, $2500-dollar producing scenarios.

1. Amanda collected keys. Lots and lots of keys. Maybe one of them went to a safety deposit box that she kept and she generously gave me some of her savings? Of course this assumes she had some serious savings. I know people might say, “What if it was a key to someone else’s safety deposit box and Amanda broke in and stole the money,” but seriously—Amanda was no thief—and many of us agreed on that one. She was a lot of things, but criminal wasn’t one of them.

2. Amanda was always talking about her vintage shopping and how she’d come across crazy things at thrift stores or flea markets that were incredibly valuable. I always assumed she meant some kind of metaphorical worth that wasn’t really worth a dime, but maybe she was being literal. Could she have found Jackie Kennedy’s forgotten pillbox hat and sold it for a bajillion dollars?

3. Amanda was a superstar writer. (Um, helllloooo infamous exposes for our school paper The Spirit that got her in tons of trouble??) Maybe she wrote a masterpiece and sold it. Or maybe she landed a show in some gallery in New York for her collages or found object art, and some mysterious foreign tycoon bought up all the pieces in one fell swoop. We could definitely see that happening.

HELP. We have to solve this once and for all.

Which scenario sounds the most Amanda?

I think Amanda made some masterpiece art. I mean, half an hour on Thornhill’s car and it looked incredible, what about a few hours on something focused. Okay. Forget I said “focused”. That’s anything BUT AV.
She was really into sending Mr.-I-Love-Mr.Snuffles (sorry Hal) to NY about his paintings, why not take her own advice? I think we should look into major art contests that happened within a few months of Callie finding the money that had $2,500 prizes.
Either that or she won a contest a while ago and put it in a safe from one of her million keys-either way it leads to the same thing.

I honestly think that Amanda is the BEST at coming up with ideas. For all we know, it could be none of the above! Maybe her parents are like, famous or important or something. Maybe thats why she never told the truth about that :s Also, if they were famous the reason she wouldn’t have told us is because, maybe she just wanted people to like her for HER. I know how she would be feeling if that is true!
      Just an idea!

        Senario number 2

        • angelgirl1011

I agree with the art idea. She drew on Thornhill’s car, she drew little things on Callie, Hal, and Nia’s lockers, and who knows what she did in her free time?
I think she drew something especially fantastic and either sold it or published it. Of course, it would have been under a pseudonym because she’s really secret. Besides, why would she use her real name? No one should know that you’re winning thousands of dollars from art.

Amanda definitely drew something. So, Scenario 3

          • Princessacat

I think the art and writing doo dacky thing. It totally sounds most likely. I mean, yeah, she may have had all those keys, but why would she have done that? Even to help Callie? And the whole car thing? deffo. But then again… well, I dunno, that seems kinda hard to beleive too. I do think there have got to be millions of reasons how it could have happened, but, admittedly, number three makes the sense. Sorry is my random burblings don’t actually make sense themselves :D

            • AllieK

2 sounds most likely to me.  I always saw her wearing cool vintage clothes so she obviously shopped at thrift stores a lot. Its possible that she found something valuable on one of her shopping trips and sold it for money.  The art idea also makes sense though.  She’s a really good artist and like RRRules said, she did send Hal to NY for that art contest so she must be really into art.  But I also agree that its prolly not even any of those and something completely different.

              • Isabelle

I agree with FashionAddict. Amanda would never sell her art, that’s just not her thing. I can totally see her being the daughter of a celebrity, and maybe she’s gone because of some messed up Hollywood Scandal. Of course, Amanda wouldn’t run away from the problem, she’s probably trying to fix it.

                • *J*

Uh, none of the above. She was probably already rich from something(parents’ good jobs, inheritance). A thought(not really idea): Amanda could be playing a challenging game. One or more of her “friends” will win part of her wealth by following her clues and finding her or something…like Rat Race. If I were in Amanda’s spot and that was the case, I wouldn’t give away the money but set up that kind of challenge-so fun. B.T.W., who’s writing as Hal, Nia, Callie and what’s-her-face? The author?

                  • Pipper

I say opyion #2 sounds like Amanda. It sounds as if Amanda can find anything. I mean, she found the key to the VP’s office, so I can imagine Amanda finding something incredibly valuable and then selling it. No way is she a theif

                    • FashionAddict

thank you isabelle! i really dont think amanda would sell her art. she is one of those people who just wouldnt! also, if she was writing the likelihood is it would be another clue for us! i dont think for 1 second that she would take her mind off this and writing a story or novel or column, she would deffo be influenced by ALL this!

                      • destinydivine

If someone loves what they do, for Amanda being writing, they’re bound to do it more often, and she was bound to do it more than just articles in the school newspaper.  Now you may shoot that down because she was always doing something or whatever, but just hear me out.  Maybe Amanda herself had an actual book published under a pen name.  If Hal, Nia, and Callie could find that book, maybe it would lead them to another clue.  Maybe the book itself would be a clue.  Then the only thing left to do would be to figure out her pen name…and that’s where my idea stops.

                        • stef_stone

Actually, I think I have a headway on the art thing. A few weeks ago my mom brought home a really pretty painting of what looks like Crab Apple Hill and hung it over our fireplace. While I was dusting the mantle the other day, I noticed a small “AV” and a drawing of a coyote in the bottom right hand corner, like a signature. I asked my mom how much it cost and where she bought it, and she said that it was about $300 in the store in town. Could Amanda have been giving her art to the store to display and sell and then collecting part of the profit?

                          • ♥MLE♥

I am going with option… Number 1! I think that all those keys Amanda “found” happened to be all to places she knew of. So that maybe she “found” a key to a saftey deposit box and took the valuables ( if that was the case) and sold them… or she found money, kept some for herself (well she will need money eventually) and gave some to Callie. I think it might be that she found vauables. Because one time during class Amanda was talking about having this really gold necklace. One of her firends asked if she was going to keep it. Amanda said that valuable things are ment to be sold. SO that is my opinion.

                            • destinydivine

I think, and this isn’t set in stone because I have many theories, that Amanda as well as Callie’s mom’s disappearences are coneccted.  I think that somehow the $2,500 were given to Amanda by Callie’s mom.

                              • RRRules

I doubt AV wrote a book and put clues in it. I mean, she would have to have written it before coming to Orion if she put in clues. And if she did after she left, we would have heard about it by now. I think we should look at art contests (in NY-Oh!! Maybe in France too, since AV was there) and look at $2500 prizes. Maybe we’ll see AV in the corner, or a coyote or a key or something like that.
I doubt she’s famous; her parents would have sent out some sort of search, and we would have heard SOMETHING.
On the topic of names (sorta), maybe AV is a pseudonym. “Valentino” might have something to do with valentine’s day. Maybe we should look at names like Valentino…and that’s where my thoughts end.
(OR, I’m just thinking about the approach of February.)

Didn`t think about that RRRules, but something important could happen on Valentines Day…
Anyway, stef_stone, I think we should definitely investigate that store in town! Or, maybe A knew your mum would buy that, and Crab Apple Hill is where we should look next. Or, maybe you should check the frame and see if there`s a key or something, because she`s hidden stuff in frames before…

                                  • dem_94

I just can’t see Amanda coming from a family of famous movie stars or number 1 selling artists, but I defiantly think her parents had money. I also think Amanda used some of the money in her safety deposit box to give to Callie. Maybe she also sold vintage stuff on eBay or something, but this doesn’t have to be complicated. Amanda always uses clues and riddles, but once you figure it out it’s like “wow! That was so obvious. How could I not see that?” I think we’re missing something that’s right in front of our faces.

                                    • RRRules

dem_94: but where would she get the money from in the first place? you said safety deposit box, but money doesn’t appear in SDBs. It has to get put there…

                                      • MandysBoy

I think even though Amanda doesn’t seem like the type to sell her art, she must be selling it. What else explains the sudden rise in business at the Orion Art Gallery? certainly not the new wall paint the owner installed last Friday. Selling a few of her more traditional pieces of artwork here and there to make money for something important is the most logical to me. Who else would sign their painting with a coyote in the corner? Picasso? I didn’t think so either.

none of the above amanda told me that her parents were secret agents and worked for the cia. i think she got the money from her parents. it all connects i just cannot connect the dots. but she certainatly wouldn’t steal the money. she keeps texting me always saying the same thing - 3397866410005 - don’t ask me what it means because i have no idea. it might be a bank account number or a code to unlock something. - nadia

Hahah these theories are cool. I like the third one only because I can agree that Amanda is an amazing writer. I hope that one of the books will be written in her point of view because she has an interesting style.

                                            • Isabelle

If Amanda wrote a book, she would have to put her name on it, unless she’s using a fake name, which would be hard to get fake i.d. made. Id anything of her’s got published we’d hear about it, so I think that theory’s out

                                              • RRRules

Isabelle, you don’t need a fake id to publish a book under another name. Just tell your publisher that you want to use a pen name. You don’t need an id saying “Jane Doe” to get published under the name “Jane Doe”.

                                                • RandomInRed

I think that option three sounds the most plausible. We all know that she’s a really good artist (Thornhill’s car, ect.) or, as mentioned, she wrote her infamous articles for The Spirit, so that seems to make the most sense.

                                                  • Kenzi

I agree that I don’t think any of them sounds like Amanda. Seriously. Maybe Amanda had some money before but I seriously doubt her parents are famous-however they MAY be rich. Plus whenever I asked Amanda if she ever would sell her work she said “No way! Why should I make a profit on something I enjoy to do just because? That’s like giving a wolf meat to howl!” art came naturally and amanda was much to humble to accept payment! The second one though…well it could make you think! If Amanda found something so cool that somebody would pay for it-wouldn’t she keep it?

                                                    • curiousjoy

I get the feeling Amanda’s one of those people whom good luck just follows around. You know how some people just have things fall into their laps just when they need them? I think that’s how it is with her. It’s like the universe just takes care of her or something. And by extension, her friends.

So I don’t think it was any of those. It was probably something totally random and chancey—like winning a scholarship, or the lottery, or getting a reward for finding some dude’s lost dog. I don’t htink she has a steady income or whatever. I think she just….finds things when she needs them. Dunno.

                                                      • Vera

None, I think she made the money with all her identitys. When I went to the place where Amanda was “living”  it turned out to be a blind lady who needs help with cleaning her home Amanda did it under the name fake name Emma. Now that she gone I do it for free but the blind lady often gives me money out of gratitude and she said she did the same for Amanda.

                                                        • stef_stone

So, taking advice from BlueLibby, I decided to check inside the frame. My mom wasn’t too happy when she saw the dismantled painting, but I promised I would put it back. (It is still laying on my bedroom floor, frameless, after a failed attempt with superglue.) Anyways, I found out that the frame was hollow, which is suprising. When I shook it, a small rusted key dropped out, as well as a piece of paper that was too waterlogged to read. I caught the words “lab”, “run”, and part of a word- “Call” (the “C” was capital, that’s how I knew it wasn’t just the word “call”.) What do you think it means?

                                                          • RRRules

Nice, stef_stone. Well, I think it has something to do with that Astro lab place that Callie’s mother worked in. Maybe it belonged to Mrs. Leary? Someone gave it to her as a gift, she found the note, and then tried to get rid of it A.S.A.P. before running.

Well, my research in New York art contests came up at basically a dead end. Basically. I found an art contest with a 2500 prize. It was drawn by a certain “Joyce Lovette”
Why do I think this may be a clue? Well, look at the meaning of “Amanda Valentino”. Amanda=Worthy of Love and Valentino=strength, health. Joy is from joy and Lovette is from-you guessed it-love.
Second reason I know that Joyce is THE Amanda Valentino? Her picture was a forest. There was an owl in the trees, a bear frolicking on the ground,  and a cougar. And, for kicks? Two yellow coyote eyes staring out from a bush.

My guess? Amanda’s telling us that she’s here, and she’s watching.

                                                            • BlueLibby

Stef_stone: Progress! Yay! I think that the word lab is def referring to the lab Callie`s mum worked at, and both Callie`s mum and Amandra ran away, or “run”! I`m still thinking about the Call…Got it! Callie! o_O

RRRules: Well, that certainly helps! The name she used is, i think, so Amanda-ish. The eyes almost def means shes still here, in the shadows, watching.

Not sure about the key….any ideas?

I think her family was rich- drug dealers, perhaps? There’s no consensus on WHAT her parents did- or even, indeed, who her parents were. The key to the deposits box makes sense, with that.
