It's hard enough to concentrate at school, but now I have all these clues buzzing around my head, totally positive that one of them will bring us another step closer to Amanda. Like, Ollie pointed out that MGM is also the initials for our Museum’s Gemstone and Mineral collection, Trumpetgirl suggested that IT could be the Braggs (a possibility that had definitely crossed my mind) and SarahB says that whatever IT is, it’s probably what Amanda and my mom(!!) are running from. Yikes.
I was so distracted that on my way to lunch, I ran into Kyle Farn in the hallway. Like, literally. He was at the announcement board hanging up flyers and I plowed smack into him. Flyers exploded everywhere. He looked kinda embarrassed when he saw it was me, probably because he still feels weird about our busting him over the Spirit of Endeavor thing. But I was feeling forgiving—okay, and a little guilty—so I helped him pick up the papers.
“Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Orion, huh?” I said, looking over the flyers as I handed them to Kyle. “I didn’t even know we had one of those.”
“Yeah, it’s not too well known, unfortunately,” he shrugged. “I help out there sometimes. It’s pretty cool. They always need volunteers to do odd jobs—yardwork, cleaning, hanging flyers…You supposed to be 18 to be a big brother or sister, but anybody can help out with the other stuff.”
“Cool.” I didn’t know what else to say. It was totally weird standing in the hallway chatting to Kyle Farn about good deeds. He was looking at me like he expected me to say something, so I avoided his eyes by checking out the other flyers on the wall. Some A/V equipment was missing from the computer lab, French Club was hosting a movie night, a girls’ basketball camp was starting up. Business as usual.
Finally I said, “So…I gotta go. See you later.” But just as I was about to flee, I remembered something RRRules posted about visiting an outreach center where a secretary had recognized a description of Amanda! I turned back to Kyle and gave him my best smile. “Kyle, do you think I could have one of those flyers?”
He gave it to me, and I rushed to meet Hal and Nia outside. Before they could ask me if I’d made any progress on the Wizard of Oz, I thrust the paper into their hands. “I know it might sound crazy,” I said. “But if one of the workers here really did recognize Amanda, don’t you think we should check it out?”
“What’s this place about?” Hal asked.
“It’s where little kids are matched up with someone older who mentors them and they do things together—go to movies, play sports, nurture the kids' interest in some way. It’s for children whose parents aren’t around that much,” Nia explained. Of course, the Nia-pedia knew all about it, as usual. It is good to have one of those at all times.
Hal looked a little skeptical, but Nia wasn’t gonna budge. “I think we should absolutely all sign up to volunteer,” she said, in her don’t-argue-with-me voice. “It says here they need people to do light office work. That’s access to information. Possibly about Amanda." She looked at us expectantly. "You guys free this weekend?”
I had been imagining a drive-by visit, but apparently it will be a more in-depth investigation--it looks like we’re about to check out the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Orion! I’m totally into it, but I can’t help but wonder...
