Amanda used to say we may not be Fate's puppets, but we certainly aren't her puppeteers. She used this deck of cards to tell people about their personalities or paths – I think she made them from items she found in thrift stores – and I swear they were infused with some sort of supernatural mojo.
The first time I saw her give a "reading" – not all Madame Zara with a funny accent or anything, just regular Amanda – was to Casey M in Biology before the bell rang. It was kind of freaky. Ok. Really freaky. Casey drew three cards: the first two… fine; the third... crickets chirping. It was a broken cuckoo clock: your time is up. No one had ever drawn that card, Amanda said. I thought she looked a little freaked but of course, Amanda being Amanda, she made up a brilliant explanation that Casey was doomed to be tardy to second period every day for a week. She then recited that scene from Clueless where the cute surfer guy accepts his award for tardiness and thanks everyone who contributed, including "the wonderful crew from McDonalds who spend hours making those egg McMuffins." I think Casey bought it, too.
A week later, Casey's dad died. Amanda retired that card... she said karma didn't need any help.
