Passing Secrets

Speaking of odd friendships, Nia and I take the cake (obvi). Right away we had to act like besties passing notes in class, which is one excellent & essential skill left over from my I-Girl days that I must say I am super happy to have. But even there, Amanda had me beat. She was unsurpassed in the art of the under-the-desk-sneaky-slip.

Oh, well, this was brilliant. I glanced at Nia, but she was still looking at her book. Okay, first of all, even if I thought it would open Thornhill’s office, how was I even supposed to get her the key? Just stand up, walk over and hand it to her?
Mr. Thornhill: Callie, what are you doing?
Me: Oh, nothing, sir. Just handing Nia the master key to the school so she can break into your office.
Thornhill: Well, in that case, carry on.
Me: Thank you, sir. I’ll do that.

Note-passing can be dangerous, but desperate times call for desperate measures. What is your secret for passing secrets? Did anybody ever catch any of Amanda’s trademark super spy moves?

Me and Amanda never passed notes using paper and pen. If we needed to communicate then we texted or im’ed using our iPod touches…never got caught either!

Me and Amanda pass notes or either text each other. I prerfer texting because you don’t have to get up and find a way to give the person the note!

      • chmivita1234

but if you have to use a note make sure that you do destroy the note or else someone might see the note…......and read it and know exactly what you guys are doing or what you are planning to do!

I’m surprised so many people here use texting since it is so much easier to get caught. it’s difficult to hide a cell phone but so easy to quickly rip off a piece of paper. amanda and i always just passed the notes(sometimes in the form of paper air planes) but if we needed to be super sticky we would use the excuse of passing one another a stapler or eraser or something to get the note to the person.

          • bananabug

i always passed notes with amanda and this girl who sat behind me alexa. we ripped them up before the end of class. we also texted but it is true it is harder to hide a phone.
but one day i almost got caught. about three o clock at the end of class i through a note in the trash after i ripped in up. the it girl in our class grabbed and fixed into place and shoved it on the teachers desk. dont worry when the teacher got up to leave she shoved it of her deskalong with some scratch papers.

Amanda and I were never really that close. I mean were not merely friends. But I’ve seen her pass notes before. She and that girl she used to sat across from in Physics always pass notes. What’s her name again? I’m not that good when it comes to names, sorry. Anyways, she always use her oops-my-pen-fall technique. It’s quite funny actually. Amanda was never caught in passing notes in Physics. I don’t if it’s just our teacher, who looks like that he never really cares or it’s just Amanda being Amanda.

              • miswera

Never passed notes to Amanda but the easiest way is to do the infallible oops-i-dropped-my-pen trick. It always works!!

I pass notes to myself.  I keep a journal, and if I’m afraid I’ll lose a really funny thought during the day, I write it on the back of a worksheet in code.  My friend and I made it up in the summer of third grade.  She remembers making the code, but not the code itself.  I remember it and I’ve adapted it to make it easier for myself.  It’s pretty cool, and is tied in with the English alphabet.  Anyone with a really active imagination could figure it out.

The best way is rolling it into a ball and kicking it across the floor because the teachers never look at the floor they think you throw it or pass it not roll it along the ground but you have to make sure you kick it far but not to far there is a skill in it I promise you :P

                    • ♥MLE♥

I have to say I know a few of these tricks… but it all depends on the class…. or writing stuffs… like if one of my freinds( that r close to me) are using a pencil, we use the i-need-to-borrow-your-sharpener technique and hide the message in there. When pens are used notes r passed by sliding notbooks or binders at the edge of our desks, but for this you have to be a skilled peeker. THere is always the roll the message in a ball and kick or throw it… All these work.. to a point….

um guys. i don’t remember Amanda being the texting type. like girls that text like seem to have their fingers glued to their phone but Amanda…. i’ve actully never seen her with a cellular phone.

when i was in the 7th grade my cousin and i hd a switch book we’d swicth over dring classes and same thing in 8th grade xcept it was like 6 of my friends and i all shared it.

i usualy never like pass notes during class but when i do. i wait till the teacher is focusing on the computer and then quickly pass it

                        • Kenzi

Well when I knew Amanda it seemed as if she was wired to her phone…or her netbook.

                          • MandysBoy

Amanda had a phone. If you have ever read Invisible I, you will notice several times where Callie is trying to call/text Amanda. Which means, unless Amanda lied about having a phone, which is highly unlikely, seeing as it is implied that Callie, Hal and Nia have called/texted her before, she does have a phone and does use it, occasionally if not often. Oh, and Amanda and I used to text for hours back when we were together.
But I agree with AwesomeAnna93 that she wasn’t glued to her phone. She liked to focus on more important things.

We have no prob passing notes…................
WE CAN READ EACH OTHERS MINDS!!!!!
Just kidding, Amanda and me always did it the old fashion way, pen and paper.

Thank you!  You triggered my memory!  Amanda and I were talking at lunch, about a week or two before she left.  Her phone rang, and she immediantly turned and started talking on it.  She was very rude about it, and I (yes, I’m an eavesdropper), heard her say, “Where?”  (pause for a response on the phone) “Yeah, I’ll be there soon.”  I remember this because 1) she was really overly happy for the rest of the day.  She usually can hold it in a little, right? and 2) She wouldn’t say who it was, and refused to answer when I asked why she was so rude.  Weird, huh?

pen and paper for us. i like seeing what we can do and not get caught. but texting is good too

Me and Amanda pass notes. We dont use words much, but mostly draw pictures that mean something.

I have this english teacher who is completely oblivious to everything. Me and all my friends just throw notes back and forth across the room as she’s talking or as soon as she turns her back. People even fling pencils around the room and she doesn’t notice. One time a pencil landed right on her desk when she was sitting there, and she didn’t even look up.

my friends always sit next to me or near me, so we just do; the classic pass.  we always use our notebooks to cover them.whenever the teacher’s back is turned, we tap each other with our feet (or the person we gave it to to pass it to each other) as if to say “lift up your notebook”, and we read them by pretending that we’re looking at our notes.  we’ve gone a whole two periods without getting caught (but that’s cause we never get caught)  :)

                                        • Cheerleader

I’ve only passed notes a couple of times, but i just would act like i had to do somthing and then hand it to the person that i needed to give the note. I never got caught. (knock on wood). hehe. Or put it on the ground like under there chair. That works to.

? for Callie and or Hal, but do u like each other?

The way I pass notes with my friends is sit next to them in class and using my note-taking paper i write on the bottom corner and cover it up with another paper so they can see the message. Then they will respond on the paper they are taking. no passing involved and the teacher thinks you are dilegently taking notes!

                                              • iheartbtvs

It’s weird..even thinking that Amanda would ever text in class..she would never..she never really texted. As she said to me, “Texting is so impersonal. I’d much rather call someone. And plus? It’s just a bonus that you can see their faces. When you see faces you can read people so much better.” We used the old-fashioned way…pen and paper!

I’ve never passed a note in class!

                                                  • AnnaliseVell

I never attended school with Amanda, or been enrolled in a brick-and-mortar school, so I’ve never passed a note to anyone.

                                                    • EHS_Librarian

I’m the librarian at Endeavor High School and I’m happy to say that Amanda spent many hours in the library reading. As you can tell from her messages, Amanda is a brilliant, well read student. Her eclectic reading interests span Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Edmond Burk and Beatrix Potter but not excluding more recent titles such as Watership Down, the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings, The Shadow Children series, What happened to Lani Garvar?, Who Killed My Daughter, Haddix’s Found series, and too many others to name. She and I had many lengthy discussions about books we have read, comparing and contrasting their plots and characters. Although other teachers thought Amanda was odd, I found her to be both intriguing and refreshing.

On the subject of note passing, I don’t believe that Amanda would do anything quite as mundane as passing notes during class or texting. Her ideas and messages are much too mysterious and oblique to be written in such a common missive.

I truly miss Amanda’s unique style and her witty conversation. If there is anything I can do to help find Amanda, please let me know.

Well I am sorry EHS Librarian but me and Amanda used to pass notes a lot. I remember this one email Amanda sent to me the day before she left. It said:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings,
These are a few of my favorite things,

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

                                                        When the dog bites
                                                        When the bee stings
                                                        When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

                                                        REMEMBER THIS SONG!!!

I forgot about it untill now when I was cleaning out my email after like two years. Do you think that maybe the song is a clue? I think probably…but what can it mean?

                                                        • fun-lovingisi

that song is from sound of music
the theme in that scene was to not worry about the bad things but rather focus on the good. the song was meant to get rid of any bad thoughts
if this was sent by Amanda then i guess it confirms that she wants us to focus on the good

i wonder if dogs and bees are evil totems…

                                                          • MandysBoy

Milana, I wonder who Amanda was talking to? Probably some other guy I suppose.

                                                            • PiscesGirl

I’ve never passed a note in class, but I HAVE written messages down on my arm or hand. Just write the message down on the inside of your arm or the palm of your hand, get the person’s attention, and hold your hand up. Simple, easy, and you never get caught. :D

                                                              • alwaysmiling

Have a spot where you can leave a note, and the other person can find. Like a hidden mailbox. Thats what Amanda and I did when I met her. She only stayed for a few days though, so I didn’t catch all her tricks!!!

                                                                • Kenzi

No offence but the whole writing on yourself if you want to keep a secret thing is kinda stupid…I mean if someone saw writing on your arm they’d obviously want to see it.

It is possible that dogs and bees can be bad totems but why would she send me the whole song if only the last part had clues? I mean their has to be some other reason then to make us look at the good things? And she wouldn’t want to mess us up would she?

                                                                  • alwaysmiling

                                                                    • alwaysmiling

                                                                      • FashionAddict

then i suggested we used invisible ink, it works a treat!

                                                                        • serpasr

I dunno y u guys pass pass notes, i used to write things on my hand and then show people.
It worked really well with amanda. since she was very discreet. the only problem was that she wrote them in chinese. we were in chinese class 2gether and well, lets just say that was how she wrote on her hand and i was basicaly flunkin chinese so it took me forever to find out what it said. By the time i found out the period would be over.

                                                                          • Strawbezz

Passing notes? I’ve never been caught.
Then again, I never really do pass notes. Like some other people, my friends are usually near me so I just scribble something quickly onto their notebook when the teacher isn’t looking. If they erase it, then it’s just looks like they wrote down some incorrect notes.
Amanda is a different subject when it comes to passing notes. I don’t really know her that well, so I can’t say much. However, if she has such ” trademark super spy moves”... why does she need our help to find her? I’m not doubting her, just questioning. It’s just that she’s so smart that it makes me think she’s up agaisnt something bigger than we expect…

There are a few great ways, depends on the situation. You can do it sneakily and slip it into the persons palm as you brush past. Or you can go for the dramatics- trip over and have them help you up whilst quickly exchanging it.
Another way- which doesn’t always work- is rolling it up and slotting it inside a pen. But it takes time until you get the hang of it.

                                                                                    • Zoey

                                                                                          • fizzy79

But I guess you can’t really call it ‘passing’ notes because what I do is pretend to get a tissue and drop the note on the person’s desk as I pass by. Or, if it’s not that urgent, I just wait until the end of that class and give it to the person. Okay, ONE time I was caught doing that but good thing that when my homeroom teacher read it out loud all it said was ‘Sure’.

For the day gets dark when nightfall comes,

To be or not to be?

                                                                                                          It could be translated to:

                                                                                                          And if Amanda wrote back:

                                                                                                          To be.

                                                                                                          It could be translated to:

                                                                                                          Totally.

As far as passing the notes was concerned, I used to carry around a tupperware container to keep all my pencil shavings in, so I didn’t have to get up to go to the bin. We just used to pass that to each other, with the note in it. That way, everyone thought we were just borrowing each others sharpeners! We made sure
we didn’t pass it too often though, otherwise people would get suspicious.

Also, with the phone subject. Amanda asked me when we first met if I had a phone and I replied, “No, I don’t need one. If I was that desperate to talk to someone while I was out, I would find a phone box. IM is also ruining the english language, and why would I want anything to do with that?”
She looked at me for a while, before getting her phone out of her pocket and letting it drop to the floor. It broke, but she still trod on it to make sure it was really broken. “I totally agree with you. I will never use a phone again.”

I ended up getting a phone shortly ater she left town. I wish I could of had one that first day, then she never would have smashed her phone and I would have her number, so I could try to talk to her now….

                                                                                                          • Jazzy0x

Amanda didn’t seem to like geting to close to people, she like to have her group of friends but nothing like the “friends forever” stuff. Me and Amanda would pass notes to each other using loads of different techniques; under the table trick, kick the paper ball along the floor, can i borrow your pen please or the best one: Please miss can I go to the toilet? And then we would leave notes tucked in cracks outside the classroom and the when one of us came back the other would ask to go to the toilet and read the note left there.

We didn’t really text during class, since I’m such a klutz, I would’ve gotten us caught if I had to hide a phone. Anyway, I usually let the note sit on the edge of my sneaker or boot and she would let her pen fall (“Oops, my pen dropped!”) on that side of her desk. When she bent down to pick up her pen, she’d gather my note at the same time. Her idea, though, was to kick the little ball (she always crunched up her paper) under your desk or throw it into the hood of your hoodie when the teacher wasn’t looking. You’d pretend to drop your pen or fix your shirt. We never got caught though one time the girl sitting behind me threatened to snitch on us. One menacing look from Amanda and she was toast!

She write it as if she were writing a note or homework, and then rip it off quietly and pretend to drop her pencil. When she bent to pick it up, she’d flick the note my way. I’d wait a moment, then bend down to “tie my shoe lace” and retreive it, stealthily un-crumpling it to read the note. I’d do the same thing, tossing it over to her. We only got caught once, and that note was about homework—whew! But her notes always had something odd about them…

She always managed to crack my code, but when I asked her if she had done this sort of thing before, she acted like she didn’t hear me. I thought it was strange at the time, but now…

We were very close, so all i had to do was give her a look, and then I’d ask to go to the toilet. A minute later, she’d meet me there and I’d tell her. Then I’d leave first, then she would come back. Never failed.

I usually am in the back of the Library reading a book and nothing else. I’m an average student mainly because I hardly do my work because my nose is always in a book. But like every teenager, I had secrets. Amanda approached me out of the blue one day and handed me a blank postcard with a web address in the top right corner and a little note below it that read “Sometimes it’s easier to share with strangers”. The website was to: http://postsecret.blogspot.com/ And I found that sending them a few of my secrets have helped out a lot. I have to thank Amanda for this, because secrets are hard to hold.
