Nicely done, one & all. Your collective brainpower has given us a fine translation of the poem. Squiggles immediately deciphered the relationship between Ursa minor/major and Callie and her mom; Milana put together that even though Callie can’t see her mom, she’s there and leaving hints; and Stef_Stone and Kenzi were quick to second those opinions for confirmation.
Hal, Callie, and I figure we’re just going to have to take these theories one at a time. First on the list? Our number one contender: CheekyMonkey’s theory that Callie’s mom DID plant the message with Madame Zee, knowing we would go to her while looking for Amanda.
So we had the reason, but we definitely didn’t have the rhyme. What clues had Callie’s mom sent? I mean, we hadn’t been paying attention to THOSE. We were busy trying to find M.I.A. Amanda. And then we started thinking about what Soccachik666 first picked up on… that somehow Amanda and Callie’s mom were connected. But what links do we have?
Callie suggested looking through some old family photo albums to see if anything triggered a connection with Amanda. And that’s when we caught our first break: Ursula Leary accepting an award outside of Astro Raven Observatory, a lab where she used to do work before Callie was born. The place studied the movements of the constellations and the effects on, you guessed it, highly sentient bird species—ravens as it happens. Seems benign enough, but not when you combine it with the fact that Hal looked puzzled for a minute and then raced to grab a page from his sketch book where Amanda had scrawled the lab’s logo AND the fact that when we had Cornelia look it up, she discovered the place shut down in 1990. Amanda wasn’t even born then. Coincidence? We think not.
So there’s THAT. And then Hal had to throw something else in the mix, that has my gray cells spinning. Apparently, on her way out of town, Madame Zee instructed Hal to pass along a message to me. I was supposed to visit this antique bookstore on Wednesday for a “rare treat.” Of course, Hal didn’t remember to tell me until Thursday. I will refrain from repeating what I said to him on his timing. I just hope it wasn’t anything too important. (But given Madame Zee’s messages to Callie, I can’t help but wonder…)
