So the great news was that theresaax2, AwesomeAnna93, dem_94, and stef_stone set up a counterpart on a laptop to the router and could track the Spirit’s every move as soon as it logged on to broadcast. The bad news was that the whole school was summoned to the D.A.R.E. assembly in the auditorium when the speakers hummed again, and those creepy bells echoed. This time the Spirit wouldn’t be able to hide, but the whole school was gathered to hear whatever it had to say.
Stef_Stone was stationed at that laptop in the art room, and she texted me the nano-second we heard the first chime: BOYS LOCKER ROOM.
“Good afternoon, Endeavor. I’m so glad you were all able to come together to hear my latest announcement.”
There was a roar as students yelled to Principal Singh to make it stop. We slipped out the back doors in the mayhem, as the now familiar voice spoke.
“I don’t want to bore you so now that I have your attention, I’m going to bring an end to all this with news of your freshmen classmates Hal Bennett, Callie Leary, and Nia Rivera . . .”
OMG! We panicked, careening down the empty halls, rubber from our shoes squeaking, racing towards the locker room. What would it say about us? Or our search for Amanda? Could we get there in time?
We slammed into the locker room door (I hesitated a second, then realized all boys were in the auditorium!), and there, alone on the bench, was Kyle Farn, a/v club member and all-around techno recluse. Huh? He had a stack of torn journal pages in front of him. AMANDA’S! I grabbed them, while Nia and Hal pulled the microphone away from his face. No more haunting Spirit!
“Hey, those are Amanda Valentino’s,” I said. “Where’d you get them?”
Kyle slumped over, almost relieved. “It was Heidi Bragg, she made me do it,” he confessed. “I have been finding these pages of secrets all over town for months, pretty much ever since Amanda came here last fall. I didn’t know what they were, or whose they were, until I read about them on your website. But then Heidi somehow heard that I had them. She threatened me, said if I did not expose every one of them—and make it look spooky, kinda witch-y and like Amanda did it, even though she is supposed to be missing—then she would expose my own secrets. You guys know how much she HATES Amanda.”
So Heidi wanted to FRAME Amanda? Her hatred runs that deep? So, urban_hippie, crummyblaire, and AGirlLikeMe were not far off, it wasn’t Amanda, but we were totally supposed to think so. Just then Principal Singh, out of breath and leading a mob of angry students, arrived in the doorway. And poor Kyle was packed off.
We were shocked and left staring at the pages. How did Amanda know all this?
