The Star Sapphire

Hey guys, it’s Cornelia again. Hal (who seems to think “little sister” means “personal secretary”) sent me out to the library this week to do some Amanda research. Because lots of you guys (stef_stone and RRRules) think that Amanda sold some of her art to get the $2,500 (wow, that’s a lot of money!) and because Orion is such a small town (meaning boring!) Hal figured it might be useful to go through the Orion newspaper archives to see if anything turned up there So, instead of studying for my history test (I mean, I feel like I already know everything I need to know about the Roman Empire) I spent the week sifting through piles of newspapers. Since no one really knows when she got her hands on the money, I started from the day Amanda disappeared and worked backwards. (I’m with marycaulf, I think Amanda knew about what was going on at Callie’s and got the money weeks before).

Wedged between the two last shelves in the basement, I began to realize how little people are interested in past Orion news. I couldn’t blame them. Each paper had the same old stories: Garbage Route Enforces Recycling… PTA Organizes Flea Market, Neighbors Complain New Apartment Buildings Ruin Skyline…Bank Opens New Wing to Expand Customer Service… I was dirty from sitting on the floor, sneezy from sniffing all the dust, and beginning to get super frustrated when I spotted a flash of color in the gray pages of the Orion Sentinel. And there it was, just a skinny little section in the Arts & Leisure section, except someone had drawn a border in purple ink around the headline and text. I didn’t know what else to do—I tore the page from the paper, stuffed the rest of it back in the archive and slipped away, sure some sensor would blare or something. When I got home my heart was pounding, not only from violating the library laws, but because I was so sure I had found something. When Hal read it, his face got all weird for a second and then he said he had a “weird feeling” about it. I am posting it here to see what you guys think.

Is this Amanda’s purple ink? Is this connected to the money?

Hmm, it seems pretty unlikely that Amanda has something to do with this. But “lear” sounds an awful lot like “leary”. How long ago was this? If it was before Callie’s mom left, maybe she sold it under a false name or the “Y” was rubbed out.
This could be AV’s pen. Which makes me more definite that Amanda and Mrs Leary are working together.
Maybe Callie’s mom DOES know AV, and she gave her the $ to send to Callie?
And some more stuff on name sources, etc.
    “Sapphire-(Eng) gemstone.”
When I searched gemstone, I got zilch. For gem, I got the following:
    “Gemala-(American) precious oak tree”
    “Gemi-(Indonesian) Modern lifestyle”
“Gemini-(latin) the twins (there are two greek/roman gods known as the gemini twins, Castor and Pollux)
    “Gemma-(Italian) Precious stone
I can think of how Gemini might connect-anyone here a twin?
Or maybe we have to go find an oak tree-does anyone live near Yellowstone National Park? Or find some Native American tree-worshiping reservation.
Gemi stumps me, though, and Gemma brings us full circle.

A little bit about Castor and Pollux:
The twins are the sons of Zeuss. One of the costellations, Gemini (Callie, have you heard of it?) is named after them, with two of the stars being named Castor and Pollux respectively.
Castor-related to, “to shine, to excel”
    Pollux-very sweet
Maybe we need to watch the Gemini constellation some night. Maybe Valentine’s day? Let’s go for a picnic on Crab Apple Hill on the 14th! Who wants to come?

It doesn’t look like there is anything rubbed out on that name.  We should research who he is, maybe that will get us somewhere?

      • ICUPEEKING

I agree with SuperChk, finding out who Mr.Edward Lear is will give us more answers on whether or not this is connected to the money Amanda gave Callie.

        • marycaulf

Money is Connected with purple ink.

          • Kitty.

Maybe RRRules is onto something with the twins thing.
And I definitely agree that we should have a look into Mr. Edward Lear.

            • AllieK

Maybe the name is written in code? Like maybe we have to unscramble it or we have to read every other letter or something.  But like SuperChk said, we should prolly try looking up the name first.

              • LaurelQ

Someone has highlighted this for a reason. I would check out who this Edward is. Could his name be an anagram? Edward Lear could be “Drawed Real”, or “Read Red Law” - could there be a red law book in the library that there’s another clue in?

                • Pipper

Wow. I really don’t think that Amanda had found and sold. But I reckon it has something to do with Amanda. Maybe She has a friend who’s a miner and they went mining together and found all them. I totally agree with LaurelQ. Amanda, Edward Lear.

Edward Lear, Callie Leary, is there some sort of connection? The last names sort of sound the same, Lear, Leary?

                      This part sounds interesting
“Lear’s nonsense books were quite popular during his lifetime, but a rumour circulated that “Edward Lear” was merely a pseudonym, and the books’ true author was the man to whom Lear had dedicated the works, his patron the Earl of Derby. Supporters of this rumour offered as evidence the facts that both men were named Edward, and that “Lear” is an anagram of “Earl”“
So maybe Amanda has her own Earl that she admires and got the sapphire from.  its interesting how edward Lear was a pseudonym when thats what people were thinking.  maybe theres someone that is a lot like Amanda that she looks up to.  IDK just theories but I think there’s something in there.

Or maybe it is a clue to a clue.

Callie, could you check your old photo books?  Your mom or dad may have known an Edward Leary.  We should try to check other records too.

Edward Lear died in1888 ad. How does he have anything to do with Amanda? He was a literary writer, with limericks and literary nonsense, which sounds like Amanda. i think there maybe an inside riddle to this article

we should look into his limericks. personally i like this one:
With such a pencil, such a pen.
You shadow forth to distant men,
I read and felt that I was there.

i looked up Edward Lear and he also did Illustrations and most of his art work had owls . Mabey amanda had known that we would look up this edward lear and find out that most of his drawings are owls.
well to get to my point .is that nea`s totem is a bird (owl).so mabey its somthing to do with nea.

I think maria_haseem is right, and that maybe Amanda liked his quotes. If this Edward Lear is the one that is mentioned in the newspaper article, I don’t think he really had anything to do with jewels. I don’t know if there is anything about stars or star sapphires in his work, though. Maybe we should check that out?

“Lear’s nonsense works are distinguished by a facility of verbal invention and a poet’s delight in the sounds of words, both real and imaginary. A stuffed rhinoceros becomes a “diaphanous doorscraper”. A “blue Boss-Woss” plunges into “a perpendicular, spicular, orbicular, quadrangular, circular depth of soft mud”. “

                                {http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Lear}

He was famous for imaginary things, random, made up nonsense. It seems very much like Amanda, very out-there.

I noticed that Lear wrote “A book of nonsense”. I took it out of the library and found, in the inside flap, a name. You know, when people go places overnight, etc and don’t want to lose things. Guess what it said?
                                    A.V.
And it was written in inside of a key that matches Key One in “Torn Journal Pages”. I compared them.
And guess what I found on the back inside flap?
                                    A coyote.

hey read this. this is a story that edward lear made and it talks aboute a owl and pussy cat . i think its somthing to do with nea and mabey hal and callie to. can you guys help me figure out if this has a meaning .

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
                                                You are,
                                                You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!’

                                          II
Pussy said to the Owl, ‘You elegant fowl!
                                            How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?’
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
                                                His nose,
                                                His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

                                          III
‘Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?’ Said the Piggy, ‘I will.’
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
                                            Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
                                                The moon,
                                                The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

I don`t know if anyone`s noticed this yet, but Edward Lear`s most famous poem is the Owl and the Pussycat. And guess what Nia`s totem animal is? The owl.

Now we just need to figure out who`s the pussycat…

Things that could be linked to do with sapphires and yellow star sapphires:
It’s septembers birthstone. Anyones birthday september???
Sapphire is symbolic for the 23rd wedding anniversary
Star sapphire is symbolic for the 26th wedding anniversary. Are callies mum and dad, or other characters celebrating this…?
Virgo, Libra and Sagittarius are all linked to sapphires.
Are any of these characters linked.

Also Mr Edward Lear like you all said could be E. Lear, then switched is Lear E.

i think invisible is on to something with the whole “Owl and the Cat” poem thing. b/c amanda recited that poem in Invisible i. and then Nia’s totem is the Owl. But i dont think that Callie’s mom is the “pussycat” because… well, that would mean that Nia and Callie’s mom were somehow related (not exactly in the family way), but like they knew eachother, y’know? and that just doesn’t really seem right to me.

Lear has something to do with where Amanda is going… or witht he owl and pussycat a reason to know about Callie’s mom like a lot of you have been saying. MAybe this all has to do with Amanda being connected to Lear. too…. I mean what if this person was a family member.. That could mean a LOT

Seriously, how many people have that exact shade purple gel pen?? Well, okay, a lot, but this is no coincidence. Amanda obviously knows your thinking patterns. She KNEW you guys would end up searching past news. I mean, by now we know Amanda is insane. But does that mean that she can’t predict the future?

We all know this was/is Amanda and is related to the money, in one way or another.

In other words, don’t write this off as coincidental. In the world of sleuthing, THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES.

I went to the museum to check out the sapphire. I didn’t gain much, but it’s from 1884 and guess what it said by the donor?
“Donated by Lear E. in honor of Gemma Valentino”
Maybe Edward Lear was in love with Gemma Valentino and gave it to the museum to make her happy?
Which means, we may have found a connection!

                                                                          • Dolphinia

Gemma means Precious stone or something like that, right? so if the last name is Valentine, then wouldn’t Amqanda be her descendant? Plus, why did it say Lear, E. and not E. Lear? Was it some old-fashioned style? PS, how old is the town of Orion? I don’t think it existed in 1884! Also, what if the sea glass Amanda was painting wasn’t sea glass at all?

                                                                            • SarahB

I think it’s kind of obvious from all your detective work that the yellow sea glass was actually the yellow saphire. The “Edward Lear” clue in the name was probably done to remind Callie of the “owl and the pussycat” clue that Amanda gave her when she talked about mixing the colour of yellow.

The real question now is how did Amanda get her hands on a yellow sapphire? Or, how did she trick the museum into thinking it was a sapphire when it was really a piece of sea glass?

I’d recommend a trip to the museum, Cornelia. Ask to speak to the curator about it, and to see their accession records for the sapphire. They’ll have any authentication documents with them that came along with the sapphire when it was added to the museum’s collection. Also, they should have the details of the person who sold it to them - it’s probably another dead end, but you never know, it may have an address or contact details for Amanda.

This is kinda pointless, but on the clipping it said that the sapphire was donated to the Orion Museum of Art and Archaeology (OMAA).  If you drop an “A”, you get OMA.  In German, “Oma” means “Grandma”.

Edward Lear was a poet (as many people have been saying) and as noted in Invisible I, Amanda was familiar with his works. Actually, I kind of remember Amanda telling me that her parents almost named her Gemma (some old dead relative, she said) So I started calling her Gemma, teasingly, if anything, and it made her really mad. She was so cute when she got mad at me I did it all the time… until… well… never mind.

                                                                                      • LaurelQ

It was obviously worth a lot of money, probably more than $2500. Maybe we need to find out who she got it from, and maybe they have some more clues about Amanda…

Well maybe that seaglass was a star sapphire! They were both yellow after all. And maybe another one of Amanda’s “identities” was Mr. Edward Lear, or Amanda sold it to him. Amanda could have also known him, and asked him to sell the jewel for her, and then give her the money. But yes, I think it has something to do with the money.

Edward Lear was a famous nonsense poet, who wrote the Owl and Pussycat, which Amanda recited to Callie (he also included Owls, Nia’s totem, in other poems and illustrations of his). She said a piece of yellow sea-glass she owned was the exact colour she always imagined the sand to be in the poem. It is possible this sea glass is the star sapphire in question.
It is also possible this has nothing to do with Amanda, but as someone else said, there are no coincedences here.
A little thought of mine which probably doesn’t mean anything but, if you’re wondering if the purple ink’s Amanda’s, well, I remember reading she had a purple cloak she was fond of, it was how Callie recognised her in one of Hal’s drawings. Might not have anything to do with anything, but, as I said, just a thought.

                                                                                              • freedomrings
