I faded back into life again.
Melanie was there. And she wasn’t even mad.
She told me all about how my mother was trying to get her court sentenced reduced for her; she was a town hero.
Then my mom came home. With great news. Not only did she get Mel’s sentence reduced, but she got it completely removed.
We all had ice cream and cake after that. It was supposed to be for Alex’s surprise birthday party, the day she killed herself.
I didn’t go to the hospital, because I had no injuries. They probably wanted to throw me in the suicide ward or something, but Alex told them that she was coming over to work on a project with me, the one where you had to throw the egg of the roof without it breaking. She said that I had started without her and fallen off the balcony trying to test out our prototype.
It was a pretty good lie. She had even fabricated our project.
So my mother didn’t know I was trying to kill myself. That was Mel and I’s little secret. It’s not like she didn’t have secrets of her own; everybody does.
