Middle School and Me

I’ve decided I don’t like middle schoolers. The kids around me as I walk to lunch talk about boys, clothes, and how much they hate our Spanish teacher. My friends sit next to me in class and ask me to say something, to do something, to take the edge off the boredom they’ve created in their minds. Why? I don’t know. I just float through school, trying to do my work and take some time to read. I think about how, truly, I’d welcome high school if I thought there was a chance things would be different. But I’m the odd one out right now. I don’t care about wearing different clothes each day or going out with a boy. My mom says I’m more mature than others, but I feel immature because I’m a year younger and am not interested in anything my friends are. Why is a year such a big difference? I’m a totally different person from everyone else, and it doesn’t seem like that’s a good thing.

hey i feel for you. in new zealand we do things differently: primary school ages 5-10, then it is intermediate school ages 11-12, and then it is high school ages 13-18. well i have just finished intermediate it was the best two years of my life so far. i won an award for art and was a school councillor. i got involved with nearly everything. we get these things called stars at my school, blue for sport, red for academic, green for service, and yellow for cultural. once you get two of each colour and two extras [of any colour] you get a bronze kauri. then once you get that same amount again you get a silver kauri, and then the same again you get a gold. well i am always the youngest of my friends. so my friends are 13 and i am still 12. but oh well. maybe you should start a book club and meet other people who like to read.

tough it out, kid, you’ve still got high school to come. There must be some EVIL geniuses behind our public (or private) school systems…
